How to Crochet a Mushroom Car Mirror Hanger

Hello and welcome back to my blog! Today's pattern is going to be how to make a mushroom car mirror hanger, but there's a twist... there is going to be a secret little storage space inside the mushroom base! This space is perfect for holding things like chap-stick or lipstick or any other small thing you like to regularly keep in your car :) This pattern is a good way to use up scrap yarn that you have lying around.

This pattern is also available in tutorial form on my youtube. If you prefer that method of learning, click the link below. In the tutorial, I also share the pattern for mushroom cap cup holder coasters. (I will be sharing the written pattern soon, depending when you are seeing this the pattern may already be up so go check it out on my blog as well!)

Abbreviations:

MR - magic ring

ch - chain

sl st - slip stitch

st - stitch

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

inc - increase

dec - decrease

Materials Needed:

  • medium weight size 4 acrylic yarn in white and red

  • 4 mm crochet hook

  • scissors

  • darning needle (depending on how you want to do the dots you may need hot glue and felt instead)

  • stitch markers

Let's get right into it! We are going to be starting with the mushroom cap.

Round 1: with red yarn, 8 sc into a MR, sl st into the first sc (8)

Round 2: sc around (8)

Round 3: inc around (16)

Round 4: (1 sc, inc) repeat around (24)

Round 5: sc around (24)

Round 6: (2 sc, inc) repeat around (32)

Round 7: (3 sc, inc) repeat around (40)

Round 8: (4 sc, inc) repeat around (48)

Rounds 9-10: sc around, sl st into first sc to end off, fasten off, and cut yarn (48)

For the spots, there are a couple ways you can do this: 1) you can cut felt circles and hot glue them on, 2) you can crochet small circles and glue or sew them on, or 3) you can do the same method I am, and use white yarn and a darning needle to sew small "sprinkles" onto the cap.

Now for the base of the mushroom...

Round 1: with white yarn, 6 sc in MR, sl st into first sc (6)

Round 2: inc around (12)

Round 3: (1 sc, inc) repeat around (18)

Rounds 4-7: sc around (18)

Round 8: (4 sc, dec) repeat around (15)

Rounds 9-12: sc around (15)

Round 13: (3 sc, dec) repeat around (12)

Rounds 14-17: sc around (12)

Round 18: ch 2, dc twice in each st around (ch 2 counts as a dc), sl st into top of ch 2 (24)

Round 19: ch 2, 2 dc in next space, (1 dc, dc inc) repeat around, sl st into top of ch 2, fasten off, and cut your yarn (36)

For the ch, we are going to re-attach our white yarn to last row of sc. (You only need to get it through one loop of one of the stitches as our mushroom won't be holding too much weight... If your stitches are too tight, you can use a darning needle to pull up a loop and loosen it to fit your hook through)

You may have to measure to see how long your ch has to be to fit around your mirror. I did 70 ch, and it worked perfectly. After you complete your ch, you will cut your yarn leaving a tail a couple inches long.

Grab your mushroom cap. We are going to be threading our chain through our mushroom cap. You will want to decide where you want your ch to come through. It will need to be close to the top of the cap. Choose two st about as far apart as the top of the base of the mushroom.

Insert your hook through the first place from the top and pull the ch through.

Then insert your hook through the second place from the bottom and pull the ch back down through.

Insert your hook back into your ch and sl st it into a sc across from the st you attached it to initially.

You will want to tie the end to make sure it doesn't disconnect later on. Then weave in your ends, and your project is done!

I hope you enjoyed this simple tutorial. If you did, please check out my other blog posts for more free patterns, as well as my youtube channel where I share tutorials for all of my patterns and more :) And if you decided to make this project, I would love to hear what you thought of this pattern and how easy it was to follow :)

Happy crocheting!
